On June 23 2016, the UK held an in/out referendum on its membership of the EU. Andrew Seaton, executive director of the British Chamber of Commerce and former British Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau, at an FCC lunch on June 15, explained the issues behind the Brexit debate. Seaton spoke about the background to and reasons for the decision to hold a referendum as well as the the main issues and the arguments being put forward by the two sides. He also looked at the outcome’s potential implications for business, including in Hong Kong.
Seaton assumed his current position in April 2015. His previous career was as a member of the UK Diplomatic Service, and included being the British Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau in 2008/2012; the head of the Foreign Office China Department, and the Commercial Secretary at the British Embassy Beijing.
