The Hong Kong Journalists Association and FCC co-hosted a march on Sunday, September 13th to protest the recent manhandling of our Hong Kong colleagues by Urumqi police.

The event started at 1pm outside the Western District Quarters Police Station at 280 Des Voeux Road West, and proceeded to the Central Government Liaison Office, where FCC president Tom Mitchell read out the following letter to Central Government:

September 13 2009

Dear Sir/Madam,

The Foreign Correspondents’ Club, Hong Kong, wishes to convey its deep disgust and anger regarding the manhandling of Hong Kong journalists at the hands of security officers in Urumqi, and at the subsequent effort by some officials there to shift blame onto the reporters. We condemn such crude treatment in no uncertain terms. Our feelings are clearly spelled out in the public statement (attached) issued by the FCCHK, to which we draw your attention. A public apology from local and provincial officials should be forthcoming.

The Foreign Correspondents’ Club, Hong Kong, urges the Central Government to conduct a full and impartial investigation in the affair, and to publish a complete and uncensored report of its findings.

While we appreciate the responsibility of the police to maintain order, there is simply no justification for beating and detaining reporters who are covering the news; indeed, it is the responsibility of security forces to protect them, in line with China’s constitutional guarantee of press freedom.

Sincerely,

Tom Mitchell, President
Francis Moriarty, 2nd Vice-President &
Chairman, Press Freedom Committee
