FCC statement on the Mindanao Massacre

22 February 2010

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo
Office of the President
Malacanyang Palace
Manila
The Philippines

Dear President Arroyo:

We write regarding the brutal slaughter of journalists three months ago in Mindanao, as well as on behalf of the many other journalists who have been killed - and continue to be killed - throughout the Philippines. Conditions for our Filipino colleagues have deteriorated to a state that is beyond endurable and simply cannot be justified. It is a tragedy to say that the Philippines has become the most dangerous place in the world to be a reporter.

As you are no doubt aware, the Foreign Correspondents’ Club, Hong Kong, has long and deep ties to the Philippines. Indeed, those close ties extend to your good self. It was in your capacity as President that you posthumously awarded our colleague, Sandra Burton, with the Ramon Magsaysay Award, which hangs in a place of honor in our Club’s Burton Room.

We urgently request a meeting with you directly, at the earliest possible convenience, to discuss what can and must be done by your Administration to afford greater protection to working journalists, and to defend your nation's hard-earned press freedoms.

We also wish to extend to you, in person, an invitation to come to the Foreign Correspondents’ Club and tell our members - who are deeply distressed and angered by developments regarding the press in the Philippines -- exactly what you can and shall do as President to afford our colleagues greater assurance of their personal safety and liberties.

We look forward to your reply in the affirmative

Sincerely,

Tom Mitchell,
President

Francis Moriarty,
