Kwan petition delivered to Thai consulate

An FCC petition calling for charges to be dropped against photojournalist Anthony Kwan – who was prosecuted by the Thai authorities for carrying protective body armour and helmet while on assignment in Thailand – was delivered to the Thai consulate on November 20.

The FCC petition was signed by 2,900 members and their guests.

Hong Kong-based Kwan was arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport when boarding a flight to Hong Kong on August 24.

Thai law prohibits possession of military equipment without a licence. He may face a charge of carrying an illegal weapon, and could be jailed for up to five years if found guilty.

Journalists regularly use body armour and helmets when reporting from dangerous locations – including the many journalists covering street protests in the past few years.
