The roads around Central Star Ferry have been getting narrower and narrower as crash barriers and spectator stands are installed. There was no missing what was going as there were banners everywhere announcing a Formula E race. Formula E??
Never heard of it until champion driver Sam Bird came to the FCC on October 7 and told us all about it.
October 9 sees Hong Kong hosting the opening round of the 2016/17 Formula E championship. Now entering its third year, “Formula E is the innovative electric-powered motor racing series which brings together top class racing drivers and cutting edge electric vehicle technology,” said Bird.
As lead driver for the DS Virgin Formula E team, Bird is uniquely qualified to discuss the differences between driving conventional racing cars and the new breed of electric vehicles. He also thinks “Formula E is set to make its mark as a global sport”.
Sunday will see whether Hong Kong’s temporary street circuit can face the challenge of high-performance electric-powered racing cars zooming around.
Bird is a professional racing driver who also drives for Ferrari in the GT class of the World Endurance Championship, where he was part of the title winning team in 2015. He also had success in the Formula 3 circuit, including a podium finish at the 2009 Macau Grand Prix. He was a reserve driver for the Mercedes F1 team in 2011 before entering the Formula E and sports car championships.
