World Press Photo: Selecting the Winners
We were informed this morning that Mr. Lekgotho Makolo, Chair of the World Press Photo General Jury 2020, has withdrawn from today’s talk. As a result, we regret to announce that this event has been canceled.
Since 1955, the World Press Photo Foundation has supported visual journalism and digital storytelling via worldwide contests and exhibitions as well as various initiatives that support talents around the globe. The organisation’s work has gained additional attention in recent days as Hong Kong Baptist University, citing safety and security concerns, decided to cancel the World Press Photo Exhibition just days before it was set to open on March 1. In this talk, Lekgetho Makola, Chair of the World Press Photo Exhibition’s General Jury in 2020, will speak about the winning photographs, challenges facing photojournalists around the globe and the power of high-quality images that tell important stories. Moderated by FCC Journalist Governor Cliff Buddle.
|Lekgetho Makola is the new CEO of the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria. He was previously the head of the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg. In 2020, he became the first African person to chair the World Press Photo Exhibitions’s General Jury, and he served on the Art Bank of South Africa Acquisition Committee in 2018 and 2019. Makola has gained extensive strategic experience in arts administration and artistic programming from an array of local and international institutions he worked for throughout his career, including Durban Art Museum, Robben Island Museum, and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Under his leadership, the Market Photo Workshop won the Principal Prince Claus Award in 2018. He was also appointed Interim CEO of the Market Theatre Foundation in August 2020. Makola studied fine arts at the Durban Institute of Technology and completed an MFA degree at Howard University in Washington, D.C.|
