Club Online Zoom Breakfast Event: Why I Founded the Bauhinia Party

Why I Founded the Bauhinia Party
Chairman, Bauhinia Party
Friday, February 26, 2021
8:00am HKT on Zoom
The launch last year of the new Bauhinia Party in Hong Kong has stirred intense curiosity, speculation and concern. Founded by a group of mainland-born businessmen aboard a yacht in Victoria Harbour, the new political party aims to recruit 250,000 members and extend the One Country, Two Systems arrangement for another 50 years, until 2097. But many are questioning whether Hong Kong needs a new political party. The pro-democracy camp has asked if the new party is a “Trojan horse” for China’s central government, while the pro-establishment camp has worried it is being supplanted. In his first public talk since co-founding the Bauhinia Party, chairman Dr. Li Shan will explain the reasons for establishing the party and his vision for Hong Kong’s future. Moderated by FCC President Keith Richburg.
Dr. Li Shan, who was born in a Sichuan village in the 1960s and later moved to Hong Kong, is a co-founder of the Bauhinia Party. A member of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), he is CEO of Silk Road Finance Corporation, a member of the Board of Directors of Credit Suisse Group AG, a senior advisor to Zurich Insurance, and with previous positions in China Development Bank, UBS, Bank of China International Holdings, Lehman Brothers, and Goldman Sachs. He also holds several academic positions including vice chairman of the Institute for Governance Studies at Tsinghua University and visiting committee member of the MIT Economics Department.
This online event is free of charge and open to FCC members, their guests and the media, and advance registration is required. Registered guests will receive the Zoom link, meeting ID and password the day before the event. Members can test this link immediately.
