The creation of the five District Council functional constituency seats for the September 3 legislative election was highly controversial. Supporters call it a step in the right direction for Hong Kong’s democratic evolution, while others say it is a poor compromise in the face of growing calls for the abolition of functional constituencies – seats elected by small pools of qualified voters.

Our speakers will discuss why they chose to enter this contentious category, whether they think they have a historic mandate to help promote democracy in Hong Kong, and what in their views is the perfect political system for Hong Kong.
