Topic: “The new Northern Sea Route: the answer to piracy?”

A journey from Europe to China via the new Northeast Passage is about 40% shorter than the route via the Suez Canal. This provides a huge potential for minimizing the risk of piracy and for cost reductions as well. When will the Northern Sea Route become a regular commercial shipping lane?

Last year Felix TSCHUDI sent the first shipment of iron ore from Europe to China via this new trade route. He plans to send even more shipments the same way this summer. Challenges related to the Northern Sea Route still remain, including climatic conditions, lack of infrastructure and short sailing season.. What are the immediate prospects of the Northern Sea Route? Come and hear both speakers’ unique experiences and challenges on this Route.

Felix TSCHUDI is the chairman and sole owner of Tschudi Shipping Company, which is a privately owned Norwegian shipping company built on more than 100 years’ experience.

Børge OUSLAND has more than 20 years’ experience with record-breaking Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. In 2010 he successfully traversed both the Northeast and Northwest passages during the same season, revealing a huge change from 100 years ago when polar explorer Roald Amundsen spent 6 years to become the first to cross both passages.
