Macau’s decision to bar Hong Kong journalists from covering the aftermath of Typhoon Hato threw the spotlight on the challenges facing the media in the former Portuguese colony.
In his talk, Mr. Matias gave a rare insight into the media landscape in Macau and what his organization is doing to defend press freedom.
José Carlos Matias is a journalist with TDM TV in Macau and president of the Macau Portuguese and English Press Association. The association has been set up to promote freedom of the press in Macau, and has just become an associate member of the International Federation of Journalists. It now has around 100 members.
