For over 20 years, award-winning political cartoonist Harry Harrison has put pen to paper satirizing Hong Kong life and politics for the South China Morning Post. Harrison returns to the Foreign Correspondents’ Club to recap his years as a Post cartoonist and share highlights from his new book, Add Ink: Cartoon Chronicles of Life in Hong Kong. (FCC members can enjoy a 30% discount by entering the promo code “FCC30” at checkout, and discounted copies of the book will also be available for sale at the event). The book showcases Harrison’s satirical wit and astute observations of the most gripping events from the last five years, including the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. “Hongkongers always have a dark sense of humour no matter how difficult things get, and the book is a tribute to the people in the city who inspire me every day,” said Harrison. “While my cartoons are not able to make the city’s problems magically disappear, I hope they can provide some relief by encouraging us to laugh at ourselves.” A selection of Harrison’s celebrated cartoons will also be on exhibit on the Van Es Wall for Club members and the general public to view and enjoy during the month of September. Moderated by Keith Richburg, FCC President (and occasional subject of Harry Harrison’s signature wit).
Harry Harrison was born in Britain in 1961, but is every bit a Hongkonger after 27 years here. He met the love of his life, Helena, while backpacking through the city in 1990. Four years later, the couple came back, settled down and had two children – Charlie and Lucy. It was also in Hong Kong where he found his calling as a political cartoonist for the Post. He drew his first cover cartoon for the Post a week after the handover in 1997 and since 2001, his work appears as the daily Harry’s View cartoon every day of the week. For more than two decades, his art has been a staple that Post readers have come to admire and appreciate, with its signature wry humour that entertains, informs and even educates. He has won many awards and his work has been widely published and recognised overseas, while he has also found fame as an illustrator of children’s books.
