Dr. Fassmann shared his views on why Europe is struggling with finding a joint consistent and effective policy response to the migratory movements of late, he discussed the fault lines that the issues on refugees and external borders had laid open among EU member states. He also talked about the chances that Europe will come up with a joint response that respects human rights and what needed to achieve this.

 

Heinz Fassmann is Professor of Applied Geography and Vice-Rector for Human Resources Development and International Relations at the University of Vienna. He is also Managing director of the Institute for Urban and Spatial Research and Chairman of the Commission for Migration and Integration Research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He is Chairman of the Expert Council on Integration at the Austrian Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and International Affairs and member of the Expert Council of the German Foundations on Integration and Migration. His areas of expertise include urban geography, demography and select issues in migration and integration research.
