Speaker: Professor Paul Yip, HKU
Director, Center for Suicide Research and Prevention
Professor Yip started with a summary of how suicide news was reported in Hong Kong, and make a comparison with overseas press. Research evidence on the relationship between problematic reporting and copycat suicide would be presented. How the media can contribute positively to suicide prevention would also be discussed. The speaker made available to all guests a newly updated copy of “Recommendations on Suicide Reporting for Media Professionals.”
The speaker was the Director of the Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention (CSRP). He was also a professor at the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at the University of Hong Kong. His research interests were in suicide prevention and demographic transition and its implication. He won the Stengel Award from the International Association for Suicide Prevention in 2011, and an outstanding researcher award and best supervisor award from the University of Hong Kong in 2012 and 2013. He was a former vice president of the International Association for Suicide Prevention.
