The sixth term HKSAR Chief Executive election, scheduled for March 27, is the first CE election to be held after the National People’s Congress adopted the Improvement of the Electoral System and enacted the National Security Law for Hong Kong. Unlike previous elections where the candidates began campaigning early on, this time not a single candidacy had been declared just three months before the 1,500-member Election Committee will cast their votes. The silence was finally broken a few days ago when Sin Kwok-lam became the first contender with his online declaration on January 19. He will discuss why he is running for the top job and share his vision for the Special Administrative Region as it enters the second half of the “One Country, Two Systems” arrangement. Moderated by New York Times reporter and FCC Correspondent Governor Austin Ramzy.
Sin Kwok-lam was the producer of the award-winning Ip Man film series. Born into a humble family residing in Sai Ying Pun, he worked as a hawker, delivery man, taxi driver, bank clerk, and auxiliary police officer before earning degrees in business administration and law on a part-time basis. He later became the managing director of Wing Hang Credit and the chairman of National Arts Holdings. Studying kung fu at a young age, he is the chairman of the World Wing Chun Union and the World Hung Kuen Association. In October 2019, he started the online platform to make policy recommendations to the government during the riots. His ideas are collected in two books: “How to cure the seriously ill Hong Kong?” (2020) and “The Strategy of Governing Hong Kong” (2021), both published by Ming Pao Publications.
