Politics, Race, Law: the Outlook for post-election Malaysia
SPEAKER
IBRAHIM “BEN” SUFFIAN
SIMON ELEGANT
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2022
8pm HKT on Zoom
After one of the closest and most unpredictable elections in Malaysian history, longtime opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim finally achieved his decades-long goal of becoming prime minister. But he will preside over a parliament that is deeply divided by race and religion. What’s next for Malaysia? Will Anwar be able to keep his governing coalition together? And what will the future hold for United Malays National Organization (UMNO) and the Barisan Nasional that had ruled Malaysia for most of its post-independence history? Moderated by FCC President Keith Richburg.

Ibrahim “Ben” Suffian is Co-Founder & Director of Programs at Merdeka Center for Opinion Research. Suffian is an entrepreneur and innovator in the public polling sector where he has contributed significantly to better governance, policy development, citizen outreach, and democratic processes within Malaysia’s political system.

Simon Elegant is a former Time magazine bureau chief in Southeast Asia and China; he covers the region for a variety of publications from his base in Kuala Lumpur.
