The new documentary Ghosts of Afghanistan follows war correspondent Graeme Smith as he returns to the conflict-weary nation, just before the return of the Taliban, in search of how everything went so wrong. Smith, who covered the war in Afghanistan for Canada’s The Globe and Mail newspaper, talks about his journeys following Western troops into combat, chronicling the war’s twists and turns, and how he uncovered human rights abuses including the torture of detainees. Directed by Julian Sher, the documentary follows Smith as he talks with human rights activists in Kabul, rural women from outside Kandahar, Afghanistan’s then-national security adviser and members of the Taliban in Doha. The film introduces us to struggling school teachers, young Afghan women with hopes and dreams, and even a poppy farmer deep in Taliban-controlled territory. It also features stunning footage of Afghanistan’s natural landscape, and fascinating glimpses of daily life in the country’s cities and countryside. Moderated by FCC President Keith Richburg. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
