Denzel Washington plays Roman J Israel Esquire, a Los Angeles criminal attorney, who falls into an existential life crisis when his longtime law partner suffers a fatal heart attack. Israel, a soft spoken legal savant, has quietly devoted his life to the idealistic championing of the downtrodden. Suddenly, his 70s afro, ill-fitting suits and diet of peanut butter sandwiches seem arcane when he is thrust into the spotlight to lead the firm’s cases and to wind down the law practice. When Israel meets his late partner’s slick former law student, played by Colin Farrell, it sends Israel down a dangerous path of temptation, where he replaces altruism with materialism and where his soul hangs in the balance.
