The world is a dangerous place. Especially if you’re a journalist. In the past decade more than 550 journalists have been killed in the line of duty. And the threat appears to be increasing; the number of journalists killed in 2020 doubled to 50 from the previous year. The riskiest environments are no longer restricted to war zones and other locations of violent conflict, but also on our own city streets. The firing line between police and protestors has become a hot zone for journalists, resulting in death, injuries and arrest.
So how do we protect ourselves, our sources and our colleagues while we attempt to practice our noble profession? Quite simply, by being prepared. It’s not enough for us to just tell the story, we have to plan to do it safely and effectively, so we can also live to report another day.
This one-day seminar will train journalists to develop a critical mindset when engaging potentially hostile environments and hostile people. In addition to thinking out your reporting story plan, you will learn the value of a having a safety plan which includes situational awareness, risk assessment, ethical reporting considerations in rapidly changing and sometime violent environments, first aid and smart decision-making in compromised situations.
Learning Outcomes
Develop critical mind-set for safety/security while reporting.
Develop ability to make smart/ethical decisions under stressful/compromised situations.
