The Future of the Newsroom
SPEAKER
GINA CHUA
Executive Editor, Reuters
Tuesday, November 23, 2021
8am HKT on Zoom
The Foreign Correspondents’ Club is pleased to welcome guest speaker Gina Chua, who will discuss how we should rethink and restructure journalism and newsroom processes in the post Covid-19 era. Newsrooms across the world are changing as information evolves in a digital age, with myriad ways people access, create and pay for news. The industry is also confronting the realisation that perspectives of newsroom leadership can shape and influence coverage, while also working to improve diversity across newsroom ranks. Ms. Chua will share her thoughts on how journalism needs to adapt – from the ground up – and fundamentally rethink what journalists do and what they produce. Moderated by Correspondent Member and Wall Street Journal reporter Natasha Khan.
Gina Chua is Executive Editor at Reuters, a position she was appointed to in April 2021. In this role, she oversees newsroom operations, including budgets, safety, security and logistics, among other duties. She’s also deeply interested and engaged in looking at new forms of storytelling and bringing more diversity to the newsroom and the stories Reuters produces. A native of Singapore, she was previously Editor-in-Chief of the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. Previously, she spent 16 years as a foreign correspondent and editor at The Wall Street Journal in Manila, Hanoi, Hong Kong and New York, including eight years running the paper’s Asia edition. Ms. Chua, who transitioned in late 2020, is also one of the most senior openly transgender journalists in the industry.
